The Ministry of Justice has confirmed a jailbreak at the Barclayville Detention Center in Grand Kru County, where six inmates escaped during the early hours of Sunday morning. The incident has sparked serious concerns about prison security and prompted a nationwide manhunt.
According to a Ministry statement, one of the escapees, Edwin Lewis, 40, who was being held on charges of burglary, theft of property, and criminal conspiracy, has since been recaptured through a coordinated operation involving national law enforcement and intelligence units.
Five Inmates Remain at Large
Authorities have identified the five fugitives still on the run as:
1. Shadrach Williams, 33
2. William Wallace, 26
3. Johnny Brown, 28
4. Koffa Sieh, 30
5. Jacob Weah, 16
The men were facing various criminal charges including burglary, theft of property, and conspiracy.
National Security Alert
In response, security has been heightened at the detention facility and throughout surrounding regions. Law enforcement agencies have intensified efforts to recapture the escapees and restore full control at the facility.
“The public is urged to remain calm but alert,” a spokesperson for the Ministry of Justice said. “We are exhausting every resource to ensure that the remaining fugitives are returned to custody without delay.”
Citizens with any credible information regarding the whereabouts of the escapees are urged to contact the Liberia National Police (LNP) or report to the nearest law enforcement officer.
Internal Investigation Launched
The Ministry has also launched a full internal investigation to uncover how the breach occurred, identify any security lapses, and implement preventive measures to avoid a recurrence.
As part of its transparency efforts, the Ministry has engaged the U.S. Embassy, the Liberia National Police, and the Press Union of Liberia to provide updates and ensure public confidence.
This remains a developing story. Further updates will be provided as investigations continue and authorities work to bring the fugitives to justice.
