Barclayville, Grand Kru – April 12, 2025: Reports have emerged about a significant issue involving illegal mining in Liberia.
Senator Albert T. Chie has issued a stern directive to local leaders, urging immediate action. This is to dismantle illicit mining activities threatening the county’s natural resources and environment. He highlighted the problem of illegal mining in Liberia.
Speaking during a community gathering held on April 10 in Barclayville City as part of his county-wide appreciation tour, Senator Chie didn’t mince words. The former Pro Tempore of the Liberian Senate and a trained geologist, Senator Chie expressed alarm. He described a growing crisis of illegal mining by both foreign nationals and local residents, including natives of Grand Kru themselves. This illegal mining in Liberia must be addressed immediately.
“The destruction of our rivers and lands by unregulated miners cannot continue,” Senator Chie emphasized. “Communities must stop protecting those engaged in these harmful practices linked to illegal mining in Liberia.”
According to the Senator, illegal miners are operating with dredge machines banned by the Ministry of Mines and Energy. They are contaminating rivers and degrading the land. He accused traditional and community leaders of turning a blind eye while the region's resources are plundered for minimal returns.
“These activities not only pollute our water bodies but also leave the county and the national government without any real economic benefits,” he said. Senator Chie also linked the surge in illegal mining Liberia is experiencing to the worsening state of roads in Grand Kru. He pointed out that the transport of heavy mining machinery is contributing significantly to the county's deteriorating infrastructure.
Addressing local government officials, including Superintendent Antoinette Worwlee Nimely and Development Officer Joe M. Sekpeh, the Senator called for coordinated enforcement of mining laws and community engagement to restore order in the sector.
As he wrapped up his appreciation visit to Electoral District #2, Senator Chie took the opportunity to thank the people of Grand Kru for their support during the 2023 elections. He vowed to remain a strong advocate for development and environmental protection in the county.
