The Midwifery Program at the Bomi County Community College (BCCC) has officially been accredited by the Liberian Board for Nursing and Midwifery, marking a significant step toward improving maternal and child healthcare in the western region of Liberia.
The accreditation, which comes after a thorough evaluation process, certifies that the program meets national standards for midwifery education. It positions BCCC to produce qualified midwives who will help address the country’s high maternal and infant mortality rates.
During a formal presentation ceremony held at the Ministry of Health in Congo Town, BCCC President, Dr. Zobong B. Norman handed the Certificate of Accreditation to Minister of Health, Dr. Louise Mapleh Kpoto. The event was witnessed by senior officials from the ministry, faculty members, and student representatives.
According to Dr. Norman, the accreditation reflects the college’s commitment to quality training and its mission to support Liberia’s broader healthcare goals. He praised the faculty and staff for their hard work in aligning the program with national and international standards.
Health Minister Dr. Kpoto welcomed the accreditation, describing it as timely and impactful. She said the move would help fill critical gaps in maternal care services, especially in rural counties where skilled midwives are in short supply.
The BCCC Midwifery Program will primarily serve students from Bomi, Grand Cape Mount, and Gbarpolu counties. Its graduates are expected to strengthen local health systems and improve access to life-saving maternal and newborn care in underserved communities.
