The Alternative National Congress (ANC) has strongly condemned what it describes as a “reckless, baseless, and politically motivated attack” by Information Minister Jerolinmek Piah against the party’s Political Leader, Mr. Alexander B. Cummings.
In a sharply worded statement, the ANC accused Minister Piah of abusing his office to engage in “alcoholic outbursts” and spreading propaganda rather than providing factual information to the Liberian public. The party described Piah’s recent comments labeling Mr. Cummings as “dishonest” as a reflection of “his desperation, abuse of public trust, and constant drunkenness.”
The ANC reminded Minister Piah that as head of the Ministry of Information, Cultural Affairs and Tourism, he is constitutionally obligated to communicate truthfully and transparently on behalf of the government — not to use the ministry as a “political attack center.”
Economic Collapse Under Boakai Administration
The ANC accused the Unity Party-led government of driving the Liberian economy into “hopelessness.” The statement highlighted the skyrocketing prices of rice, fuel, and transportation, stagnant salaries, and the collapse of businesses across the country.
“While the exchange rate appears to improve on paper, ordinary Liberians are suffering in reality,” the ANC said, blaming “gross mismanagement, incompetence, and lack of economic control.”
The party also questioned the government’s handling of the 82 yellow machines procurement deal, demanding transparency about the bidding process, funding source, and beneficiaries.
“It is shameful that this administration spends US$90,000 per vehicle for government officials, while citizens can barely afford food or medicine,” the ANC added.
Healthcare in Crisis
According to the ANC, Liberia’s healthcare system has “completely collapsed,” with hospitals and clinics lacking drugs, beds, and essential supplies. The statement condemned government officials for seeking medical treatment abroad while “ordinary Liberians die daily for lack of basic healthcare.”
“Instead of fixing the health system, Minister Piah prefers to insult opposition leaders. This reflects a government that has lost both moral and political direction,” the release stated.
Drug Epidemic Ignored
The ANC further blasted the government for failing to tackle Liberia’s worsening drug crisis, which it described as a “national emergency destroying the country’s youth.”
“There are no effective rehabilitation programs, no serious law enforcement actions, and no national plan to fight narcotics,” the statement said. “Entire communities are being consumed by deadly drugs like kush, spike and die, and solar panel.”
Corruption and Governance Failures
The ANC accused President Boakai’s administration of betraying the public’s trust through secrecy and corruption. It cited “unexplained contracts” and alleged cover-ups of scandals, including sexual abuse cases involving government officials.
“Piah and his boss are in no moral position to label anyone dishonest,” the ANC said. “They campaigned on promises of integrity but now preside over a government defined by hypocrisy and deceit.”
Cummings’ Record of Integrity
In contrast, the ANC praised Mr. Alexander B. Cummings as a leader of “integrity, results, and service,” emphasizing that he has “never stolen from the Liberian people” or “used public office for personal enrichment.”
The party warned Minister Piah and his ally Daniel Sando to desist from character attacks, warning that the ANC “will respond fearlessly and factually to any further propaganda."
The statement reaffirmed the ANC’s commitment to “speak truth to power” and “defend the interests of the Liberian people.”
“Liberia deserves better leadership — one built on honesty, compassion, and vision,” the ANC concluded. “Until this government begins to serve the people instead of itself, we will continue to expose its lies, challenge its failures, and confront its dishonesty boldly and unapologetically.”
