Monrovia, Liberia – The Board of Directors of the Millennium Challenge Corporation (MCC) is set to convene early next week to deliberate on Liberia’s eligibility for a new development Compact, Finance and Development Planning Minister Augustine Ngafuan has disclosed.
Speaking to reporters in Monrovia, Minister Ngafuan said the anticipated meeting was confirmed via official communication from Alicia Robinson-Morgan, Deputy Vice President for Compact Operations at the MCC.
“We have optimism and hope,” Ngafuan stated. “We are confident that this reaffirmation will be successful because each member of the MCC board has a deep affection for Liberia.”
While public anticipation grows, Ngafuan cautioned against reports suggesting that the new Compact will total $500 million, clarifying that no official financial commitment has been made. “The MCC has not announced any definitive amount. Those are speculative figures that are being circulated,” he said.
The Finance Minister credited President Joseph Boakai’s recent diplomatic engagements in the United States for accelerating the progress of the MCC negotiations. He noted that the President’s high-level meetings played a key role in advancing Liberia’s case for renewed support.
