Capitol Hill, Monrovia – The Liberian Senate has passed a landmark bill establishing the National Sports Fund Authority, a new agency tasked with managing and disbursing funds dedicated to the development of sports across the country.
The Senate’s decision, taken during its plenary session on Wednesday, July 23, 2025, followed a recommendation from the Committee on Youth and Sports, which endorsed the creation of the agency as a necessary step to transform Liberia’s sporting landscape.
River Gee County Senator Jonathan Boye-Charles Sogbie, the lead sponsor of the bill, explained that the Authority will be financed through a combination of levies, government budgetary support, international grants, and private sector donations.
The bill also proposes the introduction of taxes on sports-related merchandise and materials as a means of generating sustainable revenue for the Authority.
Once enacted into law, the National Sports Fund Authority is expected to provide stable and long-term funding for the enhancement of sports infrastructure, athlete training, and talent development nationwide, reducing the sector’s overreliance on inconsistent financial support.
