PROVIDENCE, Rhode Island – The Rhode Island House of Representatives has formally honored Edwin Melvin Snowe Jr., a Senator of Bomi County, for his enduring contributions to peacebuilding, democratic governance, national unity, and regional cooperation across West Africa.
The recognition came during Senator Snowe’s ongoing working visit to the United States, where he paid a courtesy call on House Speaker K. Joseph Shekarchi at the State House in Providence. During the session, the Liberian lawmaker was officially welcomed on the House floor and presented with a certificate of appreciation acknowledging his distinguished public service.
Introducing the visiting dignitary, Rhode Island State Representative Nathan W. Biah Sr. described Senator Snowe as a seasoned statesman whose legislative experience spans both chambers of Liberia’s National Legislature and extends into regional diplomacy.
Representative Biah, himself a Liberian-born lawmaker, highlighted Snowe’s historic role as former Speaker of Liberia’s House of Representatives and his current tenure as Senator of Bomi County, where he chairs the Senate Committee on Foreign Affairs. He emphasized that Snowe’s leadership continues to exemplify resilience, institutional knowledge, and a steadfast commitment to democratic principles.
“On a personal note, I have come to value not only his leadership but also his mentorship and example,” Biah told colleagues. “His steady approach to governance and dedication to country over self continue to inspire emerging leaders.”
Biah further underscored Snowe’s influence beyond Liberia, pointing to his active role in the ECOWAS Parliament, where he contributes to advancing dialogue on regional peace, security, and sustainable development within West Africa.
Following the introduction, members of the House delivered a standing ovation in honor of the Liberian senator before presenting him with a formal legislative citation.
The citation, issued on March 31, 2026, commends Senator Snowe for his “distinguished service to the Republic of Liberia” and recognizes his efforts in promoting unity, democratic governance, and regional collaboration. The honor was sponsored by Representative Biah and endorsed by Speaker Shekarchi, Majority Leader Christopher R. Blazejewski, and Minority Leader Michael W. Chippendale.

In brief remarks, Senator Snowe expressed gratitude for the recognition, describing it as a symbol of growing cooperation and mutual respect between Liberia and partners in the United States.
The honor reflects a legislative career spanning over two decades. Snowe first entered public office in 2005 as Representative of Montserrado County District #6 and later became Liberia’s first post-war Speaker of the House of Representatives. He subsequently returned to elected office in Bomi County, where he now serves as Senator.
Observers note that the recognition not only celebrates Snowe’s personal achievements but also signals strengthening ties between U.S. state institutions and African lawmakers working to promote democratic governance and regional stability.
