The United States Government has thrown its full support behind President Joseph N. Boakai’s decision to renew the mandate of the Office of the War and Economic Crimes Court (OWECC), delivering a major boost to Liberia’s quest for justice and accountability.
In a statement issued Wednesday, the U.S. Embassy near Monrovia hailed the move as a significant step toward ending decades of impunity.
“The U.S. Embassy supports President Joseph Boakai’s decision to renew the mandate of the Office of the War and Economic Crimes Court (OWECC),” the statement read. “The OWECC can now continue its work to bring long-overdue justice to Liberia and end the culture of impunity that will make a decided contribution to Liberia’s long-term prosperity and stability.”
The endorsement comes at a pivotal time as Liberians and international partners intensify calls for accountability over atrocities and widespread corruption committed during the country’s brutal civil wars and their aftermath.
The OWECC, initially established to lay the groundwork for a formal tribunal, has faced hurdles, including fluctuating political will and inadequate resources.
President Boakai’s decision to renew the office’s mandate signals his administration’s commitment to justice, reconciliation, and good governance pillars that form part of his broader reform agenda, which also includes fighting corruption, strengthening public institutions, and promoting the rule of law.
Victims’ advocacy groups and human rights organizations welcomed the move, describing it as a long-overdue step toward delivering justice for victims of war crimes and economic misdeeds.
The United States has been a longtime supporter of Liberia’s post-conflict recovery and democratic development. This latest endorsement from Washington reaffirms its commitment to seeing Liberia confront its painful past and build a future anchored on transparency and justice.
With international support now strengthened, the Boakai administration faces increased pressure to move beyond symbolic gestures toward concrete actions including pushing legislation, securing funding, and ultimately establishing the War and Economic Crimes Court.
