Capitol Hill, Monrovia – Senator Numene T. H. Bartekwa of Grand Kru County has formally written the Plenary of the Liberian Senate, urging the body to terminate the concession agreement with Atlantic Resources Liberia Limited for what he describes as the company’s abandonment of operations in Grand Kru County.
In his communication dated June 24, 2025, and addressed to Senate President Pro Tempore Nyonblee Karnga-Lawrence, Senator Bartekwa expressed deep concern over Atlantic Resources' failure to continue its logging operations since 2016, despite numerous engagements from local authorities.
"The concession agreement between Atlantic Resources and the Government of Liberia was signed in 2009 to allow logging operations in both Grand Kru and Sinoe Counties," Senator Bartekwa recalled. "However, the company's concession activities in Grand Kru have been inactive for nearly a decade."
The Grand Kru lawmaker, who also chairs the Senate Committee on Concessions and Investment, emphasized that repeated efforts by county authorities to engage the company had yielded no results.
He argued that the company's prolonged inaction signals a lack of interest and commitment, calling it a missed opportunity for both the county and the nation in terms of economic growth and development.
"In view of the above," Bartekwa stated, "I herewith request that the Liberian Senate take decisive action by terminating the operations of Atlantic Resources in Grand Kru County through de-ratification of its concession, thus giving other interested investors access to the forest in the county."
He concluded by expressing hope for swift legislative action on the matter while extending sentiments of his highest esteem to the Senate leadership and members.
The Senate is expected to deliberate on the matter in the coming days.
