Accra, Ghana – April 12th, 2025.
The Executive Director of Liberia’s Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), Dr. Emmanuel K. Urey Yarkpawolo participated in a high-level regional workshop focused on boosting the management of environmental sustainability initiatives across West Africa, which also highlights the importance of the GEF-8 Country Engagement Strategy. Dr.Yarkpawolo was joined by Mr. Desmond Tiklo Thompson, Project Liaison Officer at the EPA. The two-day forum April 10-11 was held at the La Palm Royal Beach Hotel in Accra Ghana.
This participation underscores Liberia’s efforts toward environmental sustainability. It brings together key environmental leaders and project coordinators from across the region. They put particular emphasis on the engagement strategy for GEF-8 countries and improving environmental sustainability. Ghana’s GEF Focal Point Office and Everything Sciences Consultancy are also part of this event. It is part of the GEF-8 Workshop and the overall Country Engagement Strategy. The GEF-8 Country Engagement Strategy aims to improve how national focal points manage, supervise, and report on environmental projects funded by the GEF.
The opening day featured remarks and panel discussions led by GEF representatives, technical experts, and partner institutions. Liberia participation in regional environmental events enhances these conversations which revolved around effective project oversight and accountability frameworks. Additionally, they discussed strategies for achieving stronger results on the ground with respect to environmental sustainability.
On the final day, participants tour key environmental sites in Accra, including electronic waste recycling centers. These electronic waste recycling centers are under the Africa Environmental Health and Pollution Management Program (AEHPMP). The program addresses toxic waste management and public health concerns in urban communities. It’s part of the engagement strategy for GEF-8 countries. Liberia’s participation in regional environmental events, specifically the GEF-8 Workshop, highlights its ongoing dedication to sustainability in the environment.
