The Liberian Senate has concurred with the House of Representatives to establish the Mano River Union (MRU) Parliament, a landmark decision intended to strengthen sub-regional integration and cooperation among MRU member states.
The Senate’s approval was reached on Thursday, December 18, 2025, following consideration of a report from the Committee on Foreign Affairs, chaired by Montserrado County Senator Abraham Darius Dillon.
Lawmakers said the move underscores Liberia’s commitment to regional diplomacy and collective development within the Mano River basin, which comprises Liberia, Sierra Leone, Guinea, and Côte d’Ivoire.
The establishment of the MRU Parliament stems from protocols signed by the four member states in July 2025, a process that formally launched the regional legislative body with its headquarters in Monrovia.
According to the agreement, the MRU Parliament will be responsible for drafting and voting on regional laws, overseeing joint development initiatives, and promoting policy coordination among member countries.
The body will also work to harmonize trade and customs regulations, facilitate cross-border cooperation, and ensure compliance with MRU treaties and agreements.
Key features of the MRU Parliament include proportional representation and gender inclusivity, measures designed to ensure balanced participation and amplify diverse voices across the sub-region.
The parliament will provide a unified regional platform to tackle shared challenges such as smuggling, climate change, and youth unemployment, while enhancing the Mano River Union’s collective voice on the African and global stages.
