Congress for Democratic Change (CDC) has announced a peaceful march on Monday, June 9 to Monrovia City Court in Solidarity of Former Speaker Koffa and three other Lawmakers, and demands the immediate release of those detained.
On Friday, June 6, 2025 the Liberian National Police charged and sent to jail former Speaker, Cllr. J. Fonati Koffa, Rep. Dixon Siebo, Rep. Jacob Debee, Rep. Priscilla Cooper and Rep. Abu Bana Kamara in connection to the burning of the Capitol Building.
“We consider former Speaker Koffa and the other three lawmakers to be political prisoners. Their arrest and continued detention reflect a growing trend of political intimidation and the abuse of state power.” CDC Chairman Janga Kowo lamented.
At the same time, Chairman Kowo accused the government of reneging on efforts to secure their release and said the CDC had issued a formal statement demanding their immediate and unconditional discharge.
Former Speaker Koffa, including the other lawmakers spent their first night in detention at Monrovia Central Prison, fueling outrage among opposition figures and human rights advocates.
“The CDC remains resolute and we will not bow to pressure. We will continue to stand up for what is right and defend the democratic rights of our members, CDC Chairman expressed.
Furthermore, Chairman Kowo called on all partisans of the Congress for Democratic Change (CDC) and other opposition members to gather at the courthouse on Monday to demand the release of those lawmakers.
“We will not be intimidated into silence or forced to alter our ideological beliefs,” Chairman Kango Kowo stated.
The CDC National Chairman spoke on Saturday at the grounds of the party's headquarters in Congo Town, Monrovia.
