The Ministry of Information, Cultural Affairs, and Tourism (MICAT) recently concluded a two-day training session for 40 tourism professionals, technicians, and hospitality practitioners at the Cape Hotel in Monrovia. The training, facilitated by national tourism specialists and EU-trained tourism expert Dr. Danail Alekov, aimed to strengthen Liberia’s tourism industry and position the nation as a competitive heritage and eco-destination.
The training covered key topics such as tourism operations, tourism information systems, public-private partnership models, and tourism regulation and regional taxation models. According to Deputy Minister for Cultural Affairs and Tourism, Madam Kadiatu D. Konteh-Brohiri, the tourism sector has the potential to generate internal revenue, promote sustainable economic progress, and empower regional stakeholders. The training is expected to contribute to the development of Liberia’s tourism industry, promoting economic growth and national development.
Some key initiatives aimed at boosting Liberia’s tourism sector include the establishment of a dedicated National Tourism Authority, development of a National Tourism Policy Document, and implementation of customer service training for Liberia Immigration Service. The sector also aims to promote sustainable tourism practices, emphasizing environmental preservation and community engagement, and preserve and promote Liberia’s rich cultural heritage.
Madam Konteh-Brohiri emphasized the importance of decentralizing tourism and empowering regional stakeholders to ensure growth reaches every county, community, and household. She also highlighted the potential of tourism to foster peace and understanding between people of different backgrounds, cultures, and nations.
The Liberian government, with the support of international partners, including the United Nations Development Programme and the United States Agency for International Development, is poised to unlock its immense tourism potential and create a sustainable economic future. The training is part of the government’s efforts to build capacity within the tourism sector and promote economic growth and national development.
