Telecom Community, Kakata – A tragic incident unfolded Sunday afternoon, July 6, 2025 in the Telecom Community of Kakata, Margibi County, where a technician believed to be in his 30s lost his life after being electrocuted while working on a telecommunications tower.
The deceased, identified as Daddah Efrem, was reportedly affiliated with Lonestar Cell MTN, Liberia’s leading telecommunications provider. Eyewitnesses said Efrem had traveled from Monrovia to Kakata to demonstrate a maintenance procedure on a tower critical to signal distribution in the region.
Cry for Help from the Top
According to bystanders, Efrem was seen atop the tower when he suddenly appeared distressed and began calling for help. Moments later, he fell to the ground, triggering panic among those nearby.
“We saw him up there calling for help, but before anyone could respond, he dropped,” recounted one eyewitness. “He wasn’t wearing any safety gear, unlike what we usually see his colleagues using.”
Safety Protocols Under Scrutiny
The incident has raised serious concerns over safety protocols for field technicians. Several community members questioned why Efrem was working without the necessary personal protective equipment (PPE).
“There should be no excuse for anyone climbing a tower without safety harnesses and gear,” another resident said. “This tragedy could have been prevented.”
Rushed to Hospital — Too Late
Efrem was quickly transported to the Kakata Health Center in a desperate effort to save his life. However, medical personnel confirmed him dead on arrival, citing the combined effects of the electric shock and the impact of the fall.
His remains were later transferred by Lonestar Cell MTN representatives to Solomon Tupee’s Funeral Home in Gbofelah Community, where funeral arrangements are reportedly underway.
While Efrem’s exact employment status—whether a full-time staff or contractor—has not been officially confirmed, community members say he was a familiar face on telecom assignments in the area.
Silence from the Company
As of press time, Lonestar Cell MTN has yet to release a formal statement addressing the incident or clarifying the technician’s employment status. Attempts to reach company officials for comment were unsuccessful.
Community in Mourning
The tragic death has cast a pall over both the local community and Liberia’s technical workforce, many of whom face daily risks while maintaining essential infrastructure.
“He died doing what he loved and trying to earn a living,” said one resident. “It’s a heartbreaking loss for all of us.”
Renewed Calls for Safety and Accountability
In the wake of Efrem’s death, labor advocates and community leaders are urging telecommunications companies to strictly enforce safety standards for their employees and contractors. There are growing calls for improved oversight, mandatory use of protective gear, and comprehensive training to prevent further tragedies.
“This should be a wake-up call,” said one advocate. “No technician should risk their life due to inadequate safety measures.”
