Ganta, Nimba County — Liberia’s Vice President, Hon. Jeremiah Kpan Koung, has made a resounding appeal for nationwide participation in agriculture, calling it a critical driver of economic growth and a cornerstone of President Joseph Boakai’s ARREST agenda.
Speaking at the ceremonial launch of the transplanting of over 35,000 palm seedlings on his private farm near Ganta, VP Koung emphasized the country's rich agricultural potential and encouraged citizens from policymakers to ordinary Liberians to embrace farming as a path to national development and food security.
“Liberia is a country blessed with fertile soil that, even when planting a cassava stick, can produce unexpected and fruitful results,” he noted, describing the land as “a treasure chest filled with abundant opportunities.”
Amid ongoing economic challenges and widespread food insecurity, Koung underscored the role of both small-scale backyard farming and commercial agriculture in creating jobs, enhancing self-sufficiency, and driving sustainable progress.
Drawing from personal experience, the Vice President recalled cultivating over 100 acres of lowland between 2019 and 2021 while serving as a representative and later senator of Nimba County. Remarkably, he donated the proceeds from his first major harvest to support local farmers.
Koung’s passionate message aligns with growing national efforts to rebrand agriculture not only as a means of livelihood but also as a strategic pillar for Liberia’s long-term development.
