The Press Union of Liberia (PUL) is calling on journalists and media practitioners nationwide to enhance their skills in specialized areas, ensuring high-quality reporting across various sectors. This appeal was made during the opening of a five-day training session for local journalists and media professionals in Sinoe County.
The training, organized by the CERATH Development Organization in partnership with the PUL, aims to :
• Enhance Media Capacity: Boost the capacities of local media institutions and journalists to produce ethical, timely, and accurate reports on fisheries governance.
• Promote Inclusive Participation: Foster advocacy skills among media professionals to promote inclusive participation in fisheries governance and decision-making processes, particularly for women, young people, and marginalized groups.
The Liberia Fisheries Governance Project (LFGP), funded by the European Union, supports this initiative. The project seeks to improve good governance, democracy, and accountability in Sinoe County's coastal landscape by enhancing the capacities of local civil society organizations and media actors .
PUL President Julius Kanubah emphasized the importance of public interest journalism, particularly in critical domains like sustainable natural resource management. He expressed concern that many significant issues remain underreported due to the media's focus on politics rather than substantive matters.
Sinoe County, with its 24 fishing communities, is a key area for this initiative. Eleven journalists from prominent local media outlets, including Voice of Sinoe, Liberty Broadcasting Service (LBS), and Radio Butaw, are participating in the training .
This partnership underscores the PUL's commitment to fostering a robust and informed media landscape in Liberia, addressing diverse and essential issues facing the nation today.
