Liberia has emerged as a key player in the fight against misinformation and disinformation in West Africa and the Sahel. The country’s Ministry of Posts and Telecommunications, along with the Ministry of Information, Cultural Affairs, and Tourism, and civil society partners, actively participated in the UNESCO-hosted Regional Conference on Information Integrity in Praia, Cabo Verde.
The conference brought together policymakers, regulators, media experts, academics, civil society leaders, and technology platforms to craft a comprehensive blueprint for action. Liberia’s delegation, led by Chief Information Officer Sheikh Sheriff and Deputy Minister of Information Daniel Sando, played a pivotal role in shaping the conference’s outcomes.
The adopted Final Recommendations outline a multifaceted strategy to promote information integrity, focusing on:
1. Multinational Collaboration*: Establishing a Regional Observatory against misinformation and disinformation under the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS).
2. Legal Frameworks*: Adapting national legislation to tackle misinformation without infringing on human rights or freedom of speech.
3. Access to Information*: Promoting transparency through the digitization of public records and dismantling cultures of secrecy.
4. Media Literacy*: Integrating Media and Information Literacy (MIL) into early education curricula and strengthening fact-checking in newsrooms.
Liberia has pledged to integrate these regional recommendations into its national framework, enhancing the country’s information ecosystem and making it more resilient, inclusive, and equitable. As a regional leader, Liberia is committed to collaborative progress and empowering citizens with accurate information.
By taking a proactive stance against misinformation, Liberia is positioning itself as a model for other countries in the region. The country’s efforts will contribute to a collective shield against the manipulative forces that threaten societal stability, ensuring that truth prevails in the pursuit of peace and prosperity.
