Stockholm, Sweden – May 18, 2025 – Senator Edwin Melvin Snowe Jr., Chairman of the ECOWAS Parliament’s Committee on Political Affairs, Peace, Security, and Africa Peer Review Mechanism (APRM), is currently participating in a United Nations and Folke Bernadotte Academy-facilitated course on dialogue and mediation in Stockholm, Sweden.
The course, which runs from May 18 to 24, 2025, brings together peace practitioners from around the world to enhance their capacity in conflict prevention and resolution through dialogue and mediation. Senator Snowe Jr. is representing the ECOWAS Parliament at the week-long training.
The training aims to deepen participants’ understanding of UN principles, mediation fundamentals, and inclusive approaches to peace building. It also seeks to improve practical skills in facilitating dialogue and building trust among conflicting parties.
In a telephone interview, Senator Snowe Jr. described the preceding online component of the course as “very good and impressive,” highlighting the exchange of experiences among participants. “I was able to share insights gathered from the ECOWAS region, including our diplomatic interventions in Sierra Leone and Liberia,” he said.
He also shared perspectives on the withdrawal of Burkina Faso, Niger, and Mali from ECOWAS, as well as political developments in The Gambia and Guinea Bissau. “We discussed similar situations in Iraq, Afghanistan, and Saudi Arabia, comparing lessons and strategies,” he noted.
Senator Snowe Jr. revealed plans to share the knowledge and materials gained with members of his committee and disclosed that he has already proposed to the organizers to sponsor a small ECOWAS team for follow-up sessions in Abuja, Nigeria.
“I would be coming back with materials that would benefit the Committee and facilitate knowledge sharing among colleagues,” he concluded.
