A transformative step is underway in Lofa County as the Change Agent Network University (CAN-U), a private higher education institution, is poised to become a government-run university. The decision follows a formal petition from youth in Zorzor and Salayea districts, who called on their lawmaker, Hon. Augustine B. Chiewolo, to initiate the transition.
The petition, presented recently to Hon. Chiewolo, underscored the local youth’s call for improved access to affordable, quality tertiary education. The young petitioners believe government ownership of the institution will enable broader program offerings, increased enrollment capacity, and stronger alignment with national development priorities.
Responding to the appeal, CAN-U’s founder and administrator, Mr. Eric Wowoh, presented a letter of waiver to Hon. Chiewolo—officially signaling his willingness to relinquish ownership and transfer full control of the institution to the Government of Liberia. The unprecedented gesture has been widely praised as a patriotic act aimed at strengthening educational opportunities in the county.
Hon. Chiewolo, who represents Lofa County District #5, received the waiver with optimism, committing to work with fellow lawmakers and education authorities to ensure a smooth and legal transition process. He emphasized that the move aligns with his legislative priorities, which include improving education, infrastructure, and healthcare in the district.
Founded with a mission to promote education and skills development in rural Liberia, CAN-U has long served as a beacon of hope for many in Lofa. The potential transition into a public institution is expected to elevate the university’s status, expand its reach, and make higher education more accessible to youth across the region.
As the transition process moves forward, community members, education stakeholders, and national leaders are expressing hope that the government's takeover of CAN-U will pave the way for long-term social and economic development in Lofa County and beyond.
