The Revolutionary National Youth League (RNYL) of the Congress for Democratic Change (CDC) has sharply rejected a recent statement by the Ministry of Justice, describing it as a veiled threat against the CDC and the growing opposition movement.
In a strongly worded press statement issued Thursday, the CDC Youth League alleged that the government of President Joseph Nyuma Boakai, through the National Security Council and the Director of the Executive Protection Service (EPS), Sam Gaye, has orchestrated a plan to assassinate former President George M. Weah and former Vice President Jewel Howard-Taylor.
“This deadly plan, masterminded by Mr. Boakai, is being executed by recalling all state security assigned to the former President and Vice President,” the Youth League claimed. “This dying regime must be warned: we will not be intimidated by threats, nor will we submit to the demands of tyranny.”
The group condemned what it called the "broad daylight butchering" of Liberia's democracy and legal institutions, accusing the Boakai administration of double standards. It argued that while protests are constitutionally protected, opposition figures like former Vice President Taylor are being punished for exercising those rights.
“How can protest be a constitutional right, yet illegal for a former Vice President to support without having her security detail revoked?” The Youth League asked. “Was Joseph Boakai stripped of his security when he supported the June 7 protest against the CDC government?”
Further attacking the Ministry of Justice, the Youth League referenced the recent controversy surrounding the House of Representatives' leadership, saying the Ministry emboldened an “unconstitutional power grab” by the “illegal Majority Bloc.”
Declaring their intention to resist without seeking permission, the Youth League invoked historical figures like Thomas Sankara and Nelson Mandela, emphasizing that "justice is not granted by tyrants; it is seized by the brave and oppressed."
“We will mobilize the streets to confront your repressive apparatus, fire for fire,” the statement warned. “We challenge a killer in Gregory Coleman and his gangs disguised as law enforcement officers to stand in our way and meet the full force of a people pushed to the edge.”
Meanwhile, the Youth League also called on Speaker J. Fonati Koffa to reject any rumors of resignation and to "continue standing on the side of democracy and the rule of law."
"Succumbing isn’t and can’t be an option while our democracy is being butchered," the Youth League noted, adding that Liberia must never return to an era of an imperial presidency.
The statement was issued under the authority of the National Executive Committee of the Revolutionary National Youth League of the Congress for Democratic Change.
