The Coalition for Democratic Change (CDC) has strongly denounced the violent actions targeting Madam Edith Gongloe-Weh. She is a candidate in the upcoming Nimba Senatorial By-Election. The incident occurred on April 6, 2025, in Gborplay, Nimba County. It involved supporters of Rep. Samuel Kogar and Vice President Jeremiah Kpan Koung. Such incidents are part of a worrying trend of elections violence.
In a statement released on April 9, the CDC described the attack as a direct assault on democratic rights. It is also a setback for women’s leadership in Liberia. The party emphasized its commitment to inclusive leadership. It condemned the divisive rhetoric and violent tactics allegedly endorsed by Kogar and Koung. They specified that elections violence must not be tolerated.
The CDC called for swift action from the Liberia National Police and the Independent National Commission on Human Rights. They urged an investigation into the incident to hold those responsible accountable. Additionally, the party urged international organizations, including ECOWAS and the African Union, to address the issue diplomatically. They want to prevent further elections violence.
As Liberia approaches the April 22 By-Election, the CDC reaffirmed its dedication to a peaceful and transparent electoral process. They warned against any attempts to undermine democracy. The party expressed solidarity with the people of Nimba County. They also called for unity in rejecting all forms of elections violence.
