MONROVIA | Report Liberia – June 9, 2025 – Former Speaker of the House J. Fonati Koffa and three other lawmakers were released Monday morning from the Monrovia Central Prison, commonly known as South Beach, after spending three nights in detention.
The lawmakers — Koffa (Grand Kru County), Dixon Seboe (Montserrado County District #16), Abu Bana Kamara (Montserrado County District #15), and Jacob Debee (Grand Gedeh County District #3) — were seen exiting the prison compound shortly after their legal team secured bond, following days of procedural hurdles.
Their release follows mounting political tension surrounding the Capitol Building arson investigation. The four lawmakers are facing serious charges, including arson, criminal conspiracy, and attempted murder, linked to the December 2024 fire that caused significant damage to the legislative complex.
Supporters of the opposition Coalition for Democratic Change (CDC), under whose banner the lawmakers were elected, gathered outside the prison, cheering as they emerged. Former President George Weah and other opposition leaders had earlier made appearances at the Monrovia City Court to show solidarity, condemning what they described as politically motivated charges.
The Capitol Fire case continues to dominate national discourse, with legal observers, civil society actors, and rights advocates calling for due process, transparency, and impartiality in the ongoing proceedings.
