Rome, Italy – President Joseph Nyuma Boakai has reaffirmed his commitment to repositioning Liberia on the global stage, with a focus on Europe, to boost national development and economic growth. During an interactive meeting with the Liberian community in Rome on Tuesday, the President highlighted the importance of an educated workforce in driving the country’s progress.
Addressing Liberians residing in Italy, President Boakai praised their dedication to education, acknowledging the sacrifices they make in pursuing studies abroad. He emphasized that the government’s role is to create a conducive environment that would encourage these individuals to return home and contribute to Liberia’s development.
“We are proud of the sacrifices you are making to further your education,” President Boakai stated. “Our goal is to ensure that Liberia becomes a nation you are eager to return to and invest your skills in, helping to move our country forward.”
With an estimated 5,000 Liberians currently living in Italy, many of whom are students, President Boakai’s message resonated with the aspirations of the diaspora community. They expressed optimism about the potential for returning to a Liberia that offers better opportunities and supports their growth.
Meanwhile, members of the Liberian community raised concerns about the challenges they face in regularizing their immigration statuses in Italy. They emphasized the need for stronger diplomatic support from their home country to address these issues effectively.
In response, President Boakai assured the community that his administration plans to appoint an Ambassador to Italy soon. He stated that this step would strengthen diplomatic relations and directly address the challenges faced by Liberians in Italy, ensuring they have the support they need.
“Establishing a diplomatic mission in Rome is a priority for us,” the President said. “We want to have an Ambassador here to oversee our affairs and to assist you with the challenges you face in your day-to-day lives.”
Furthermore, President Boakai also underscored the strategic importance of Rome as a hub for international institutions, including the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the United Nations. He stressed that having a diplomatic presence in such a significant city would bolster Liberia’s engagement with global development agencies.
Additionally, President Boakai urged the Liberian diaspora to remain engaged with the Liberian Embassy and to continue contributing to both their personal success and the nation’s growth. He emphasized that the administration’s goal is to harness the skills and knowledge of Liberians abroad to enhance the country’s future.
As Liberia works to strengthen its global presence and development initiatives, President Boakai’s engagement with the diaspora in Europe marks a significant step towards building partnerships that will contribute to the nation’s long-term progress.
