The Plenary of the Liberian Senate has taken a decisive step toward addressing growing concerns over the operations of Western Cluster Liberia Limited (WCL), following a formal communication from Senator J. Alex Tyler, Senator of Bomi County and Chairman of the Western Region Legislative Caucus.
Senator Tyler, who also chairs the Western Region Legislative Caucus, accused the iron ore mining company of gross violations of the Mineral Development Agreement (MDA) it signed with the Government of Liberia. He cited the company’s failure to fulfill key contractual obligations, particularly social development and community payments owed to Bomi, Grand Cape Mount, and Gbarpolu Counties.
“The people of Bomi, Grand Cape Mount, and Gbarpolu have waited patiently for justice. The company continues to exploit our resources while refusing to deliver on its promises,” Senator Tyler said in his letter.
He warned that WCL’s alleged actions not only undermine the welfare of citizens in the affected regions but also reflect blatant disrespect for the authority of the Liberian state. He urged the Senate to intervene urgently.
Following the presentation, Senator Edwin Melvin Snowe Jr. of Bomi County offered a motion for the matter to be referred to the Senate Committees on Judiciary and Investment. The motion, which received overwhelming support, mandates the committees to launch a comprehensive investigation into Western Cluster Liberia operations and report their findings within two weeks.
The Senate’s decision to investigate was unanimously endorsed by plenary, signaling bipartisan concern over the conduct of concessionaires operating in the country.
