Concerned Unity Party Supporters Call For Suspension Of Alleged Corrupt Government Officials.

Concerned supporters and members of the Unity Party and its alliance have issued a stern demand for the suspension of Commerce Minister Amin Modad, alongside other public officials who have failed to declare their assets, in accordance with Liberia’s Code of Conduct. The call comes amid growing concerns of corruption within President Joseph N. Boakai administration, particularly among those who were once vocal critics of such misconduct.

In a press release, the supporters expressed continued admiration for President Boakai’s achievements on the global stage, particularly securing Liberia’s non-permanent seat on the United Nations Security Council. However, they expressed disappointment over allegations that key figures within his administration have engaged in corrupt activities, with Minister Modad at the center. The group criticized Modad’s acceptance of a luxury vehicle valued at US$96,000 from a company accused of defrauding the government, calling it a betrayal of the “Rescue Mission” that brought the Unity Party to power.

Meanwhile, the Concerned Rescue Supporters urged President Boakai to swiftly address all public officials cited by the Liberia Anti-Corruption Commission (LACC) for failing to declare their assets, asserting that this would send a clear message of the administration’s commitment to good governance and transparency. The group believes such actions are critical to strengthening Liberia’s policies against corruption.

In addition to Modad suspension, the group called for an immediate audit of the National Social Security and Welfare Corporation (NASSCORP) by the General Auditing Commission (GAC). They urged Minister Sylvester Grigsby to clear his name over an alleged $500,000 misappropriation, and for other officials implicated in corruption to face accountability before the Liberian people.

Furthermore, the Unity Party supporters highlighted concerns within the Liberia Telecommunications Authority (LTA), insisting that the acting head address accusations of criminal misconduct from the previous administration. They emphasized that selective justice would weaken the administration’s fight against corruption, urging equal accountability across all government agencies.

Citing the “Rescue Mission” as a promise to rid Liberia of corruption, poverty, and inequality, the group emphasized the importance of President Boakai’s government in waging an uncompromising battle against corrupt individuals. They called for the administration to heed the cries of the people, particularly the partisans who worked tirelessly to elect the Unity Party.

The supporters at the same time questioned the Civil Service Agency’s (CSA) recent payroll cleansing efforts, expressing concern over a sudden increase in the government’s wage bill despite claims of removing ghost names from payrolls. They demanded an explanation for this unexplained rise and called for greater transparency in government financial management.

The group also commended Unity Party Chairman Luther Tarpeh for speaking out against corruption but urged him to resign as Board Chair of the National Port Authority (NPA) to ensure his advocacy remains impartial and independent. They called on all other party officials with government appointments to step down as well, adhering to the Code of Conduct and avoiding conflicts of interest.

The statement concluded with a strong appeal for Unity Party leaders to address the economic plight of grassroots partisans, who, despite their efforts during the campaign, continue to suffer from unemployment and lack of economic opportunities while others benefit from government positions through favoritism.
