Supreme Court of Liberia Overturns Life Sentence for Former Chief Justice Gloria Musu Scott.

The Supreme Court of Liberia has overturned a previous ruling by Criminal Court “A,” which had sentenced former Chief Justice Gloria Musu Scott and three of her family members to life imprisonment for murder.

The high court’s decision on August 28, 2024, concluded that the state failed to prove the accusations beyond a reasonable doubt.

In December 2023, Cllr. Scott, along with Alice C. Johnson, Gertrude Newtown, and Rebecca Wisner, was found guilty by a jury of murder, criminal conspiracy, and making false statements to law enforcement.

The conviction led to life sentences for all four defendants. The case centered around the murder of a young woman, Charlotte, who was reportedly stabbed nine times.

However, in a landmark ruling, Chief Justice Sie-A-Nyene G. Yuoh of the Supreme Court stated that the evidence presented by the state was insufficient to uphold the convictions.

The court found that there were significant gaps in the prosecution’s case, which failed to establish the defendants’ guilt beyond a reasonable doubt.As a result, Chief Justice Yuoh ordered the immediate release of Cllr. Scott and her co-defendants.

The court also restored their rights, effectively exonerating them of all charges. The ruling marks a significant reversal of the previous court’s decision and has drawn widespread attention.

Following the announcement of the verdict, there were scenes of jubilation outside the Supreme Court. Family members and supporters of Cllr. Scott celebrated the ruling, expressing relief and gratitude for the court’s decision.

The case has been closely followed by the public, given the high-profile nature of the defendants and the serious charges they faced.
