The Government of Liberia has welcomed the recent Supreme Court ruling on the leadership crisis in the House of Representatives, describing it as a timely opportunity for lawmakers to recommit to national service and set aside political differences.
Speaking during the Ministry of Information’s regular press briefing, Information Minister Jerolimek Matthew Piah said the Boakai administration is increasingly alarmed by the prolonged standoff in the House, which he said is undermining national development efforts and eroding public confidence in democratic institutions.
“This internal dispute has the potential to undermine the progress we’re making in national development and governance,” Piah warned. He emphasized that the country’s pressing needs require a unified and functional legislature that places the interest of the Liberian people above all else.
Minister Piah reaffirmed the government’s respect for the independence of all three branches of government, but urged members of the House to comply with the Supreme Court’s decision and leverage it as a basis for crafting a peaceful resolution to the leadership conflict.
He further disclosed that the government has been actively engaging relevant stakeholders, including the Traditional Council of Liberia, to help mediate and facilitate dialogue among the warring legislative blocs.
“The road to national recovery requires all hands on deck,” Piah said, calling on lawmakers to return to legislative business with a renewed commitment to their constitutional duties. “Their constitutional oath demands service above self.”
The government commended lawmakers who have already recommitted themselves to their duties and expressed optimism that the full House will soon reunite in the interest of national progress.
Minister Piah concluded by stating that a united legislature is critical to the successful implementation of the ARREST Agenda, which President Joseph Boakai’s administration views as the blueprint for Liberia’s inclusive development and long-term recovery.
