Monrovia, Liberia – In a compelling address at the 4th Commencement Convocation of the Professional Journalism School of Liberia, Atty. Gbawou Kowou urged graduates to maintain the highest standards of integrity in their reporting. He warned them against accepting gifts that could compromise the truth and distort their stories, potentially damaging the reputations of those with high moral standing.

Atty. Kowou emphasized the critical role of journalists in society, reminding the new graduates of their duty to inform, educate, and inspire change through factual reporting. He highlighted the importance of their role in holding everyone accountable, regardless of their status or position.

“The Liberian society is limited in size,” Kowou noted, “and whatever is said in the media can spread rapidly, often without scrutiny.” He stressed that journalists must remain steadfast in their commitment to accuracy, as their work has the power to shape public opinion and influence societal norms.

Additional, Atty. Kowou posed a thought-provoking question: “What will your contribution be like, and how will history remember you?” He underscored the long-term impact of their work and the legacy they will leave behind in the field of journalism.

Meanwhile, in support of their future endeavors, Atty. Kowou announced the provision of fifteen scholarships to the Professional Journalism School of Liberia, aimed at encouraging more individuals to pursue careers in journalism.

The valedictorian of the graduating class, Mrs. Linda Dorcas Y. Kawala, also delivered a powerful speech, urging her peers to remain vigilant in their commitment to accuracy and integrity. She reminded them of their roles as torchbearers of truth and champions of justice, emphasizing the profound power of the media in shaping societies and driving change.

“As we embark on our journey into the world of journalism, we must strive to be change-makers, truth-tellers, and custodians of the public’s right to know,” Mrs. Kawala stated. She called on her fellow graduates to use their voices to uplift the marginalized, challenge the status quo, and foster a culture of transparency and accountability.

The 4th Commencement Convocation Ceremony of the Professional Journalism School of Liberia took place on Saturday, August 10, 2024, marking a significant milestone for the graduates as they stepped into the world of professional journalism.
