CDC Accuses LNP of Intimidation at Party Headquarters.
August 5, 2024 — The Opposition Congress for Democratic Change (CDC) has issued a stern warning to the Liberia National Police (LNP) regarding the deployment of riot police officers around its headquarters in Congo Town. This move by the LNP has sparked significant controversy and concern among CDC members.
The Party’s Acting Chairman, Janga Kowo, condemned the police presence, describing it as an unprovoked act of provocation. Kowo stated that such actions by the police should not be repeated, as they disrupt the normal activities of the party and instill unnecessary fear among its members.
Kowo further elaborated that the presence of riot police at the CDC headquarters on Monday morning created an atmosphere of terror, panic, and fear. He noted that the party’s headquarters is a place where members regularly gather, and such intimidation tactics are unacceptable.
The CDC’s allegations come amidst growing tensions between the opposition party and the government. This incident has added fuel to the fire, with the CDC accusing the LNP of deliberately attempting to undermine their activities and intimidate their supporters.
The Liberia National Police has yet to respond to these accusations. However, citizens believes that the police deployment of riot officers was part of a routine operation to maintain public order and ensure safety in the area.
Despite this, the CDC remains adamant that the police actions were targeted and unnecessary. Kowo called on the government to respect the rights of opposition parties and to refrain from using state security apparatus to intimidate political opponents.
The incident has drawn criticism from various civil society groups and human rights organizations. They have called for an investigation into the actions of the LNP and urged both parties to engage in dialogue to resolve their differences peacefully.
As the situation develops, the CDC has vowed to remain vigilant and to continue advocating for the rights and freedoms of its members. The party has urged its supporters to remain calm and not to be provoked by what they describe as attempts to derail their political activities.
