The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) of Liberia has commenced a nationwide demolition exercise targeting illegal structures built in wetlands, waterways, and beachfronts. The operation, which kicked off on April 16, 2025, is part of a broader effort to prevent future flooding and enforce environmental laws.
The joint taskforce includes the Ministry of Public Works (MPW), Paynesville City Corporation (PCC), Monrovia City Corporation (MCC), Liberia Land Authority (LLA), General Services Agency (GSA), and is backed by the Liberia National Police (LNP). This initiative falls under the mandate of Presidential Executive Order 143, aimed at curbing encroachment on protected areas.
The first phase of the demolition is being carried out in SKD Boulevard, Police Academy, Tyler Island, and Jacob Town. Authorities say these areas are among the most vulnerable to flooding due to unauthorized construction and dumping in wetlands and waterways.
Prior to the demolition, the EPA held a press conference on April 8, 2025, to inform the public of its planned actions. The agency reports that all affected individuals were notified in advance, and an awareness team engaged directly with violators to provide further information and warnings.
The EPA is urging anyone with structures in restricted areas to voluntarily remove them immediately. It warns that continued non-compliance will result in forceful demolitions, as witnessed in the initial phase of the operation.
The agency says it is committed to extending the demolition exercise to other parts of the country. It also appreciates the cooperation of citizens who are adhering to environmental laws and contributing to the fight against urban flooding.
