Monrovia, Liberia – April 14, 2025 – The Liberia National Police (LNP) has issued a formal apology to the opposition Congress for Democratic Change (CDC) following public concerns over the presence of armed police officers at the party’s recent Due Payment Launch held along Tubman Boulevard in Congo Town.
The incident, which took place during a mass gathering organized by the CDC, sparked widespread debate after images and reports surfaced suggesting that armed LNP officers were spotted performing duties typically handled by the Executive Protection Service (EPS). The EPS is the agency constitutionally mandated to provide security for VIPs, including former and current government officials.
According to a statement issued by the LNP on Monday, the officers in question were not acting under orders to serve in any VIP protection capacity. Rather, their assigned roles were limited to maintaining public order, managing traffic, and ensuring crowd control—tasks that fall squarely within the LNP’s operational scope.
The police authority admitted, however, that the visible presence of armed personnel near key political figures may have created the impression that the LNP was overstepping its bounds. “We recognize the concerns raised by members of the public and the CDC leadership, and we take them seriously,” the statement noted.
In light of the controversy, the LNP reaffirmed its commitment to upholding professionalism and transparency within the ranks. It further emphasized the importance of a clear distinction between the duties of the police and those of the EPS, especially during political activities that draw large crowds and heightened public attention.
“We extend our sincere apologies to the leadership of the Congress for Democratic Change for any misunderstanding or inconvenience this incident may have caused,” the LNP said. “Our primary objective remains to support the efforts of the Executive Protection Service and ensure the safety and security of all public gatherings in accordance with the law.”
The LNP concluded by stating that internal measures will be taken to ensure officers are fully briefed on their roles and responsibilities during similar events in the future. The institution promised to remain vigilant and responsive to public concerns as it continues to perform its duties across the country.
