MONROVIA, LIBERIA – Liberia's political landscape is beginning to take shape well ahead of the 2029 General and Presidential Elections, with the Movement for Economic Empowerment (MOVEE) becoming one of the first political parties to formally endorse former President George Manneh Weah for another bid for the nation's highest office.
In a resolution adopted by its National Executive Committee, MOVEE unanimously declared Weah as its preferred presidential candidate for the 2029 elections, reaffirming its commitment to the Coalition for Democratic Change (CDC) alliance and pledging to work tirelessly to return the opposition bloc to state power.
The endorsement follows Weah's recent public announcement that he intends to contest the presidency in 2029 after serving as Liberia's 25th President from 2018 to 2024.
The statement, signed by National Secretary General Jeremiah Edison Paye and approved by National Chairman Prince G. Mehn, described the former president as an experienced leader capable of restoring economic growth, strengthening democratic governance, promoting national reconciliation, and preserving peace and stability.
According to the party, the decision reflects what it believes is an increasing desire among Liberians for leadership with governing experience as the country prepares for another electoral cycle.
Strengthening the CDC Alliance
MOVEE reaffirmed its longstanding partnership with the CDC, recalling its support for Weah during the historic 2017 presidential runoff and again in the fiercely contested 2023 elections.
The party noted that the narrow outcome of the 2023 runoff demonstrated the competitiveness of Liberia's democracy and underscored the opposition's confidence heading toward the next national elections.
As part of its roadmap, MOVEE announced plans to roll out an extensive nationwide political mobilization campaign across all 15 counties. The initiative will focus on grassroots engagement in districts, cities, towns, and communities to strengthen support for Weah's presidential bid while simultaneously campaigning for CDC-endorsed senatorial and representative candidates.
The party disclosed that its Political Leader and Standard Bearer, Ambassador Dee-Maxwell Saah Kemayah Sr., has directed party structures at every level to intensify voter outreach, coalition-building, recruitment, and civic engagement activities in preparation for the 2029 polls.
"Comeback Is Irreversible"
Throughout the statement, MOVEE repeatedly emphasized its campaign message that a "2029 Weah Comeback Is Irreversible and Unstoppable," describing the slogan as the guiding theme for its nationwide political activities over the coming years.
Party officials expressed confidence that sustained grassroots mobilization and collaboration with alliance partners would position the opposition strongly ahead of the elections.
Criticism of the Current Administration
MOVEE also used the statement to criticize the administration of President Joseph Nyuma Boakai and Vice President Jeremiah Kpan Koung, alleging economic hardship, corruption, insecurity, abuse of power, illegal drug trafficking, and governance shortcomings.
These claims reflect MOVEE's political position. The Boakai administration has consistently defended its record, citing governance reforms, anti-corruption initiatives, infrastructure development, and efforts aimed at stabilizing the economy and improving public service delivery.
Community Development Agenda
Beyond politics, MOVEE highlighted its social intervention programs, particularly the Ambassador Dee-Maxwell Saah Kemayah Sr. Women Empowerment and Vocational Skills Training Program.
According to the party, the initiative provides free vocational education and practical skills training for women and young people, promoting entrepreneurship, economic self-reliance, and sustainable community development.
Early Momentum Toward 2029
Political observers say MOVEE's endorsement represents one of the earliest formal declarations ahead of Liberia's 2029 presidential election, signaling that political parties are already positioning themselves for what is expected to be another highly competitive contest.
As a constituent member of the CDC since the coalition's formation in 2017, MOVEE remains part of one of Liberia's most influential opposition alliances despite the coalition's defeat in the 2023 presidential runoff.
With roughly 1,163 days remaining before Liberians head to the polls in October 2029, analysts believe the endorsement marks the beginning of an extended period of political organization, coalition-building, and nationwide campaigning.
The party concluded by calling on MOVEE members, CDC supporters, and what it described as "well-meaning Liberians" to unite behind George Manneh Weah's presidential bid while supporting allied legislative candidates in an effort to secure victory in the 2029 elections.
