MONROVIA, Liberia — The Office of Senator Momo Tarnuekollie Cyrus has dismissed media reports attempting to link the lawmaker to the ongoing investigation into the seizure of narcotics valued at approximately US$19 million, insisting that neither the Senator nor SEGAL Incorporated bears responsibility for the alleged drug trafficking case.
In a statement issued Tuesday, July 7, the Office clarified that Senator Cyrus resigned as General Manager of SEGAL Incorporated immediately after assuming public office and has since played no role in the company's management or daily operations.
The statement noted that although Senator Cyrus co-founded SEGAL in 2006, the private security firm now operates independently under its own leadership and administrative structure.
Addressing concerns surrounding SEGAL's security contract with GLS Mengies at Roberts International Airport, the Office emphasized that the company's responsibilities are limited to perimeter security, including regulating access to designated areas, conducting patrols, and protecting facilities from unauthorized entry.
It stressed that SEGAL has no authority to inspect cargo, verify shipping documents, operate cargo scanners, clear imports or exports, conduct narcotics detection, supervise customs procedures, or investigate criminal activities. According to the statement, those responsibilities fall under the statutory mandates of government agencies responsible for customs, aviation security, immigration, narcotics enforcement, airport operations, and criminal investigations.
The Office argued that attempts to associate the Senator with the ongoing investigation based solely on his historical connection to the company misrepresent the facts and risk misleading the public.
While reaffirming support for press freedom, the statement urged journalists and commentators to ensure that reporting on matters of national importance is based on verified facts rather than speculation.
The Office further accused some individuals of attempting to politicize the investigation through narratives unsupported by evidence, warning that such actions could distract from efforts to identify those genuinely responsible for the alleged criminal enterprise.
As Chairman of the Senate Committee on National Defense, Intelligence, Security and Veteran Affairs, Senator Cyrus reiterated his support for a thorough, impartial and credible investigation into the case.
The statement maintained that no individual or institution should be above the law and that anyone implicated by credible evidence should face the full weight of the law without political or institutional protection.
It also noted that Senator Cyrus continues to serve alongside President Pro Tempore Nyonblee Karnga-Lawrence as Co-Chair of the Senate Committee of the Whole overseeing the Senate's review of matters relating to the investigation.
The Office concluded by assuring Liberians and the international community that Senator Cyrus has never interfered with the investigation and remains committed to strengthening Liberia's security institutions, supporting transparency, and ensuring that justice is guided solely by evidence, due process, and the rule of law.
