Lofa County District #5 Representative, Augustine B. Chiewolo, has strongly endorsed the diplomatic approach of President Joseph N. Boakai in addressing the ongoing border dispute between Liberia and Guinea, urging calm and national unity amid rising tensions.
Speaking during an appearance on a state radio program, Representative Chiewolo emphasized that conflicts of such nature cannot be resolved through confrontation, but rather through sustained diplomatic engagement. He called on all Liberians to rally behind President Boakai’s efforts to peacefully resolve the crisis and maintain stability.
The Lofa lawmaker also commended the youth of Foya District for what he described as a courageous and patriotic response during the height of the border tensions. According to him, their actions to restore the Liberian flag after reports of Guinean soldiers crossing into Liberian territory and hoisting their flag demonstrated a deep sense of national pride and commitment to safeguarding the country’s sovereignty.
However, Representative Chiewolo expressed serious concern over statements made by some former war generals, who have reportedly suggested mobilizing to defend the country against perceived threats. He cautioned that such rhetoric is dangerous and could further escalate tensions, stressing that the responsibility to defend the nation lies solely with the Government of Liberia and its security apparatus. He urged all individuals and groups to refrain from making inflammatory statements that could destabilize the peace.
The lawmaker disclosed that he was part of a high-level delegation from the House of Representatives of Liberia that recently visited the Liberia–Guinea border to assess the situation firsthand. The delegation was led by House Speaker Richard Nagbe Koon.
He further noted that the Legislature, in collaboration with the Executive Branch and other relevant government institutions, is actively engaging Guinean authorities to find an amicable resolution to the dispute. He urged citizens to remain calm and avoid spreading misinformation, particularly on social media platforms, warning that unverified claims could worsen the situation.
Representative Chiewolo made these remarks on Thursday, March 26, 2026, during his appearance on ELBC’s “Inside the Legislature,” where he also discussed key national and legislative issues, including developments within his district.
Touching on local matters, the lawmaker highlighted his recent annual report delivered to the people of Zorzor and Salayea Districts, outlining his achievements and ongoing initiatives.
In closing, Representative Chiewolo called on leaders of Lofa County to put aside their differences and unite for the collective advancement of the county. He noted that persistent divisions have hindered opportunities for qualified sons and daughters of the county to secure government appointments, particularly in areas like Zorzor and Salayea, which overwhelmingly supported the ruling Unity Party in the last elections.
He urged stakeholders to work together under a common agenda and collaborate with the President in the best interest of Lofa County and its people.
