The President Pro-Tempore of the Liberian Senate, Hon. Nyonblee Karnga-Lawrence, has assured citizens that the Senate remains fully engaged and prepared to act despite officially entering its first legislative break of the Third Session of the 55th National Legislature.
In a formal address delivered Tuesday, Senator Karnga-Lawrence emphasized that while the break is part of the Senate’s legislative calendar, it does not signal a pause in governance or oversight responsibilities.
“This recess does not in any way diminish the Senate’s constitutional responsibility to remain attentive, responsive, and proactive,” she stated.
Heightened Attention on Liberia–Guinea Border Situation
The Senate’s break comes at a time of growing concern over developments along the Liberia–Guinea border. While details remain sensitive, the Senate acknowledged the situation as serious, warning that poorly managed border issues could threaten both territorial integrity and the livelihoods of citizens in affected communities.
Karnga-Lawrence reaffirmed the Senate’s support to the Executive Branch in addressing the matter through peaceful and diplomatic engagement.
“Liberia remains committed to peace, regional cooperation, and respect for international boundaries,” she noted.
Senate Backs President Boakai’s Diplomatic Engagement
The Senate also used the occasion to commend Joseph Nyumah Boakai for his recent engagement with lawmakers, describing it as a demonstration of strong democratic coordination between branches of government.
According to the Senate leadership, such collaboration is critical, particularly during periods of national concern, as it ensures unified decision-making in addressing pressing issues.
Global Crisis Raises Economic Concerns for Liberia
Beyond security matters, the Senate highlighted the economic implications of ongoing global tensions, particularly the crisis in the Middle East, which continues to disrupt supply chains and international markets.
Liberia, being heavily reliant on imports, is vulnerable to rising costs of fuel, food, and essential commodities—pressures that ultimately impact the daily lives of ordinary citizens.
Key Committees Activated During Legislative Break
To maintain continuity in governance, the Senate has mandated several key committees—including Defense, Ways and Means, and Internal Affairs—to remain fully operational throughout the break.
These committees are expected to:
Monitor the border situation closely
Track economic and fiscal developments
Coordinate with the Executive Branch to ensure timely responses
This move, the Senate says, reflects its commitment to ensuring that “governance does not pause” during recess.
Senate Ready to Reconvene if Necessary
Karnga-Lawrence made it clear that the Senate stands ready to return to session at any time should the situation demand urgent legislative action.
Importantly, she noted that any such reconvening would be done without placing additional financial strain on the government.
Senators have also been urged to remain within reachable distance and maintain readiness for immediate recall.
Call for Calm Among Citizens
Addressing Liberians—especially those in border communities—the Senate called for calm, cooperation, and reliance on verified information from official sources.
The leadership reassured citizens that their safety remains a top priority, while urging unity and national solidarity during this period.
A Message of Unity and Resilience
In closing, the Senate President Pro Tempore reminded Liberians of the country’s resilience and the importance of unity in times of uncertainty.
“Our strength lies in our unity, our resilience, and our collective commitment to peace and progress.”
She reaffirmed that the Senate remains steadfast in its constitutional duty, actively monitoring developments and prepared to act decisively when required.
“May God continue to bless our efforts, guide our leaders, and protect the Republic of Liberia.”
