VATICAN CITY — Pope Francis returned to the public eye on Sunday, making his first appearance at a public Mass since being hospitalized last month with a serious lung infection.
The 88-year-old pontiff was warmly welcomed by thousands in St. Peter’s Square as he arrived in a wheelchair for a special Jubilee Mass focused on the sick and those with disabilities. He greeted the crowd with a smile and a brief message: “Good Sunday to everyone. Thank you very much.”
This appearance marks a significant moment in the Pope’s recovery. He had spent several weeks at Gemelli Hospital battling pneumonia, and although he appeared physically frail during his discharge in March, his voice and energy seemed notably improved during Sunday’s ceremony.
Despite his recent health struggles, Vatican sources say the Pope has remained active behind the scenes. He recently approved several important decrees related to the future canonization of figures from Venezuela, Papua New Guinea, and an Armenian archbishop who died during the 1915 genocide.
The Pope’s presence at the Mass was seen as a hopeful sign by many of the faithful gathered, reflecting his resilience and commitment to the Church during a challenging time.
