The Central Bank of Liberia (CBL) has launched a nationwide "Clean Note Campaign" to protect the Liberian dollar and promote national pride. The campaign, themed "Our Money, Our Pride – Handle It with Care," aims to address the alarming rate of mutilation of Liberian dollar banknotes and coins.
Poor handling practices, such as squeezing, writing, stamping, and exposing notes to dirt and moisture, have damaged up to L$1 billion of the new family of banknotes printed in 2022. This not only undermines the appearance of the national currency but also costs the country millions of dollars to replace.
The CBL is urging every Liberian to take responsibility for safeguarding the value of their currency and showing pride in their national identity. The campaign includes:
- A two-day float across Monrovia to raise awareness
- Music, drama, and community engagement to drive home the message
- Radio programs, community theater, grassroots outreach, and direct market engagements across Liberia
The campaign has secured strong backing from key national stakeholders, including commercial banks, business associations, and motorcyclists' unions. These groups have pledged to mobilize their members to take ownership of the campaign and push its message nationwide.
Those damaging the currency risk a fine of L$500,000 or a two-year jail term. CBL Executive Governor Henry F. Saamoi emphasized that the campaign is about more than just preserving paper notes, but about showing respect for the Liberian dollar as a symbol of national sovereignty.
The CBL is urging the public to actively support the campaign, join awareness activities, and become champions of the message: "Our Money, Our Pride – Handle It with Care." Together, Liberians can save the country millions in printing costs and demonstrate nationalism and respect for the Liberian dollar.
