Monrovia, Liberia – December 18, 2024 – The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has expressed deep concern over the escalating tensions in Monrovia following violent clashes between the Liberia National Police and protestors on December 17, 2024. The regional body has condemned the violence and called for restraint from all parties involved.

In a press statement released on Wednesday, ECOWAS emphasized the need for both protestors and law enforcement officers to exercise caution and act within the confines of their respective rights and mandates. The organization warned that continued unrest could threaten the country’s fragile peace and stability.

Reacting to reports of a fire at the Capitol Building earlier this morning, ECOWAS urged Liberian security agencies to launch a swift and impartial investigation into the incident. The regional body stressed the importance of transparency and called on authorities to make the findings of the probe public in a timely manner.

Adherence to the rule of law and democratic principles is paramount,” the statement read, urging all stakeholders to uphold the Liberian Constitution. ECOWAS noted that peaceful engagement and dialogue are critical to resolving grievances and avoiding further deterioration of the situation.

The organization also reiterated its commitment to supporting Liberia’s democratic process and ensuring stability in the region. ECOWAS called on political leaders, civil society groups, and citizens to work toward reconciliation and unity.

As Liberia faces mounting tensions, ECOWAS encouraged all parties to prioritize peace and the collective good of the nation, warning that sustained discord could have wider implications for the subregion.
