Flooding Submerges 24 Houses in Glanyah Gold Camp, River Cess County; Residents Plead for Urgent Government Intervention.

Glanyah Gold Camp in River Cess County has been devastated by severe flooding, with over 24 houses submerged following heavy rains that began late Thursday. The ongoing downpour has caused significant damage to the Southern region of Liberia, particularly in Glanyah, where entire communities are now engulfed by water.

Local sources have reported that three houses have been completely destroyed, leaving residents stranded and desperate. The flooding has reached critical levels, as the community struggles to cope with the aftermath. Descriptions from those on the ground paint a bleak picture, with Glanyah Gold Camp nearly inaccessible.

In a bid to escape the rising waters, residents have resorted to using canoes to navigate the flooded landscape. The Cestos River, which flows near the camp, has swelled considerably, worsening the situation for those attempting to flee or return to safety.

Several individuals, including women, children, and health workers, are currently stranded at nearby ITI due to the dangerously rising river. Makeshift wooden boats, owned by Ghanaian miners, are the only means of crossing, but the perilous trips are often undertaken without safety precautions, raising fears of potential accidents.

Meanwhile, one local health worker expressed the community’s growing concern, stating, “We are risking our lives every day just trying to cross the river. If something isn’t done soon, we fear the situation will only get worse.”

Despite the increasingly dire situation, there has been no visible response from local or county authorities. Journalists on the scene have noted that no concrete actions have been taken to address the crisis or provide relief to the affected areas.

Furthermore, River Cess County, like much of Liberia, is prone to seasonal flooding, but this year’s rains have caused unprecedented devastation. Without immediate government intervention, the lives and livelihoods of those in Glanyah Gold Camp remain in jeopardy.

Residents are now urgently calling on the national government to intervene, hoping that heightened awareness will prompt action to save their homes and ensure their safety.
