United States Embassy Near Monrovia Announces the arrival Of A High-Level US Justice Delegation In Liberia To Support Efforts on The War And Economic Crimes Court.

The US Embassy near Monrovia has announced the arrival of a high-level U.S. government justice delegation to Liberia, which is set to visit from September 22-24, 2024. The visit aims to strengthen cooperation between the U.S. and Liberia through the justice sector, and to contribute in efforts to establish a War and Economic Crimes Court of Liberia.
According to the U.S. Embassy, the delegation comprises of representatives from several key U.S. government agencies, including the Department of State’s Office of Global Criminal Justice, Homeland Security Investigations, the Department of Justice (U.S. Attorney’s Office in Philadelphia), and the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI). The delegation will meet representatives from the Liberian government, as well as Liberian counterparts in law enforcement, the legal sector, and civil society.
The U.S. Embassy highlighted that the delegation will build partnerships, exchange ideas, and share experiences with regard to prosecuting complex cases in a trauma-informed and victim-centric way and also said, the delegation brings extensive experience investigating and prosecuting war crimes and other atrocity crimes, as well as victim support.
Meanwhile, the release issued by the U.S. Embassy on Monday, September 23, 2024 quotes Beth Van Schaack, the U.S. Ambassador-at-Large for Global Criminal Justice, saying Liberia’s commitment to establishing a War and Economic Crimes Court. “We are proud to send this delegation to Liberia in support of its local efforts toward justice and accountability,” Van Schaack stated in the release. She at the same time added that the U.S. government stands ready to partner with Liberia as the country embarks on this critical challenge.
The engaging visit is expected to strengthen partnerships between the two nations and foster the exchange of ideas that both U.S. and Liberian officials can learn from each other experiences in bringing justice to victims of war and economic crimes.
