Unity Party Chairman School; Best Brains Academy Defies Government Policy on Graduation Fees, Ministry of Education Urged to Act.
By: Melvin Flomo
In a recent investigation, it has been revealed that Best Brains Academy, a high school owned by Unity Party Chairman Luther Tarpeh, is charging $180 for graduation fees. This figure significantly exceeds the $100 limit set by the Unity Party government for 12th graders in private schools.
The discrepancy between the charged fees and the government’s policy has raised concerns among parents and students. Many families are already struggling with financial burdens, and the inflated graduation fees add to their challenges. The policy was initially implemented to ease these burdens and ensure that education remains accessible and affordable for all students.
The Unity Party government, under whose administration the policy was established, intended to create a level playing field for all students, irrespective of their socioeconomic status. The policy aimed to prevent private institutions from imposing exorbitant fees that could potentially exclude deserving students from celebrating their academic achievements.
Chairman Luther Tarpeh role as the owner of Best Brains Academy has come under scrutiny, with many questioning the school’s compliance with governmental regulations. The situation presents a conflict of interest, given his position within the Unity Party, which further complicates the matter. Stakeholders are calling for transparency and accountability in this regard.
In response to these findings, calls have been made to the Ministry of Education – Liberia to address the issue swiftly. The Ministry is urged to enforce the established policy and ensure that all private schools adhere to the set guidelines, protecting students and families from undue financial strain. The enforcement of this policy is crucial to maintaining the integrity of Liberia’s educational system.
Parents and advocacy groups are particularly vocal about the need for immediate action. They argue that allowing such violations to persist undermines the government’s efforts to support education and diminishes public trust in the educational system. Ensuring that schools comply with the policy is seen as a necessary step in safeguarding the interests of students.
The broader implications of this issue extend beyond Best Brains Academy. It highlights the need for robust monitoring and regulation of private educational institutions across Liberia. Ensuring compliance with government policies is essential for creating an equitable educational environment that benefits all students.
As the Ministry of Education reviews the situation, stakeholders await their decisive action. The outcome of this issue will set a precedent for how similar cases are handled in the future, ultimately shaping the landscape of Liberia’s education system.
