Former Solicitor General of Liberia, Cllr. Sayma Syrenius Cepheus, acting as legal counsel for Margibi County Senator Nathaniel McGill, has declared the Senator innocent of all corruption allegations. Speaking at the Liberia Anti-Corruption Commission (LACC), Cllr. Cepheus reiterated that Sen. McGill is committed to upholding the law and will cooperate fully with the ongoing investigation.

The LACC had, on August 16, 2024, summoned Senator McGill to provide information concerning an ongoing investigation into allegations of payroll padding and corruption. The probe centers on a supplementary payroll containing 728 names at the Ministry of State for Presidential Affairs, during McGill’s tenure.

In a press statement, Cllr. Cepheus emphasized that Sen. McGill respects the legal process and will voluntarily present himself for questioning. He assured the public that the Senator’s cooperation will not incite any tension during the investigation.

Meanwhile, a large group of supporters from the ruling Coalition for Democratic Change (CDC) gathered outside the LACC in a show of solidarity with Sen. McGill. Their chants were soon met with a strong police presence as over twenty armed officers from the Liberia National Police were deployed to the scene to maintain order.

Moreover, Alvin Weeseh, Secretary General of the CDC Youth Wing, expressed the group unwavering support for Sen. McGill. Weeseh accused the Boakai-led government of using the investigation to distract from its own alleged corruption, specifically budget alterations.

Mr. Weeseh at the same time further urged Senator McGill to exercise his oversight as Chairman of the CDC Legislative Caucus. He called on the Senator to scrutinize the $22 million allocated for road maintenance and rehabilitation, and other questionable expenditures under the current administration.

Neverrheless, the situation highlights the growing tensions between the CDC and the Boakai-Koung government, with Senator McGill’s legal team and supporters vowing to fight back against what they see as a politically motivated investigation.
