National Disaster Management Agency (NDMA) and Partners Launch Comprehensive Search and Rescue Operations in Response to Flood Crisis.

In a concerted effort to address the ongoing flood crisis, the National Disaster Management Agency (NDMA), in collaboration with the National Red Cross and other key partners, has swiftly mobilized resources to initiate extensive search and rescue operations across affected regions.

Speaking at the Ministry of Information, Cultural Affairs, and Tourism (MICAT) regular press briefing on Thursday, August 8, 2024, NDMA Executive Director Ansu V. Dulleh confirmed that a dedicated team is currently on the ground, working around the clock to locate and assist those in distress. “We are determined to provide immediate relief and support to those affected, ensuring that no one is left behind,” Mr. Dulleh stated, underscoring the agency’s commitment to helping communities navigate through these devastating circumstances.

Mr. Dulleh also announced the activation of several specialized clusters within the NDMA, including Communication and Coordination, Health and Safety, Search and Rescue, Shelter, and Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene (WASH). These clusters are composed of skilled professionals and volunteers who are collaborating closely to deliver essential services and ensure the well-being of the most vulnerable populations.

The Executive Director highlighted that this coordinated approach is crucial in addressing the needs of affected communities both urgently and comprehensively. The integrated response strategy is designed to streamline efforts and maximize the impact of relief operations, minimizing the potential for gaps in service delivery.

In recent times, the NDMA has made significant strides in improving its coordination mechanisms, bringing together key stakeholders, including heads of ministries and agencies, to manage disaster response efforts more effectively. This has resulted in the activation of the national flood response plan, a key element in the current operations.

As part of their proactive measures, the NDMA has conducted a comprehensive data collection and assessment exercise to identify vulnerable communities impacted by the floods. This data is critical in shaping the agency’s response and ensuring that humanitarian needs are met efficiently.

Furthermore, the NDMA has engaged the United Nations (UN) system to seek additional support for the over 48,000 flood victims reported across three counties. However, Mr. Dulleh noted that there are pending reports from other regions, bringing the estimated number of victims to over 60,000 as recorded by the NDMA’s Risk and Early Warning Department.

In collaboration with the United Nations, the NDMA has also carried out joint needs assessments in flood-affected areas, which are instrumental in informing the ongoing response efforts. Additionally, the agency has initiated the activation of two regional hubs in Bong and Grand Bassa counties, aimed at decentralizing disaster response operations and improving efficiency.

To bolster its relief efforts, the NDMA, through its partnership with CEMENCO, has secured food and non-food supplies for disaster victims. These contributions are a testament to the importance of private sector engagement in supporting national disaster management initiatives.

Looking ahead, the NDMA recently launched the Early Warning for All initiative, which focuses on constructing a comprehensive roadmap for disaster risk reduction in Liberia. This initiative includes strategic planning and early designs for addressing both natural and human-induced hazards, marking a significant step forward in enhancing the country’s disaster preparedness and response capabilities.
