Liberian Returnees Seek President Boakai Intervention as LRRRC Reports 85% Aid Fulfillment.

Monrovia, Liberia – A group of Liberian returnees from Ghana gathered outside President Joseph Boakai’s residence in the Rehab community on Thursday, demanding his intervention over unfulfilled financial promises from the Liberia Refugee Repatriation and Resettlement Commission (LRRRC).
The returnees, who arrived back in Liberia approximately four months ago with the aid of the LRRRC, claim they are facing severe challenges, including the lack of shelter and the financial support promised to them. The LRRRC had pledged $300 per household head to assist in their resettlement, but many say they have yet to receive this crucial aid.
Upon their arrival, the returnees were welcomed at the CARI Center in Bong County and later moved to Johnsonville, where they were assured of financial support and assistance with their reintegration. However, their hopes for a smooth transition have been dashed, as the promised help has reportedly not been delivered.
On August 8, about 50 returnees, including families with children, marched long distances to President Boakai’s residence, carrying placards that read, “We need our money” and “Are we not Liberians, LRRRC?” Their protest highlighted their frustration and the urgency of their situation.
In response, President Boakai’s Director of Cabinet met with the returnees and assured them that their concerns would be investigated and addressed. This gesture signaled the President’s commitment to ensuring that the promised support is provided.
Meanwhile, LRRRC Executive Director Patrick Worzie, claimed that approximately 85% of the returnees have already received their promised aid. He stated that 300 out of the 1,579 returnees are still awaiting their financial assistance, and the LRRRC is collaborating with the Ministry of Finance to resolve the outstanding cases.
Mr. Worzie also expressed disappointment over reports of vandalism by some returnees, who allegedly damaged LRRRC property, including vehicles and other materials. He urged the returnees to exercise patience as the commission works to address their concerns.
The situation remains tense, but the LRRRC has reassured the returnees that efforts are ongoing to ensure that all outstanding promises are fulfilled as soon as possible.
