Senator Twayen Pushes for Implementation of Census Results…

Capitol Hill, Monrovia-Liberia, July 5, 2024 – The Senate Committee on Autonomous Commissions and Agencies has been tasked by the Liberian Senate’s Plenary to investigate and report on the status and updates of the 2022 Population and Housing Census.

The 2022 Census, conducted by the Liberia Institute for Statistics and Geo-Information Services (LISGIS) with support from international partners, has yet to be implemented by the government.

This mandate follows a communication from Senator Nya D. Twayen, Jr. of Nimba County, requesting the Plenary to summon the Director General of LISGIS and relevant authorities to provide a situational report on the 2022 Census.

Addressing the Plenary, Senator Twayen emphasized that it has been two years since the Census was conducted, and no actions have been taken. He highlighted the critical role of the Population and Housing Census in providing demographic, social, and economic data essential for research and policy planning, as well as information on population size and distribution across political subdivisions.

Senator Twayen also pointed out that the 2029 General and Legislative Elections are just over five years away, and failure to address the 2022 Census could impact the elections. He stressed the urgent need to finalize the Census results to enable the Legislature to resume its constitutional duties and responsibilities, given the country’s growing population.
