In an early morning operation on Monday, July 1, 2024, the Paynesville City Corporation dismantled market structures at ELWA Junction, ordering vendors to vacate the area. According to eyewitnesses, city police commenced the demolition at midnight, confiscating goods guarded by private security personnel on duty.

In conversation with our Reporter’s, Madam Termom Towillie a street seller alleged that the City Police invaded private homes, causing damage and demolishing rental properties and other residential structures. She described the situation as chaotic and distressing for the affected residents.

Meanwhile, Amos Terpeh, a private security guard, revealed to our platform that city police seized goods from market vendors’ homes. He expressed concern over the forceful entry and the impact on the vendors’ livelihoods.

Attempts to contact the Paynesville City Police commander were unsuccessful as officers claimed he was unavailable. The absence of official statements has left many questions unanswered regarding the operation’s legality and the fate of the confiscated goods.

At the same time, Pedestrian Ebenezer Blamaloh expressed support for the clearance, comparing it to cleanliness initiatives in other countries. He believes the operation will contribute to a cleaner and more organized city environment.”I am thankful to the Government and most especially the City corporation for undertaking such a great initiative and I am urging them to enforce these ordinances to other parts of Monrovia” Another resident of ELWA stated.

The Paynesville City police remain stationed at ELWA Junction, preventing vendors from returning and monitoring vehicle traffic in the area. Their continued presence indicates a long-term commitment to maintaining the premises a new status.
